Once again, Representative Jo Ann Emerson has shown her true RINO and liberal leaning colors to the people of Missouri’s 8th district. On July 18 of this year, a delegation of 127 Congressmen and women drafted a letter to Speaker of the House (John Boehner) and Majority Leader (Eric Cantor) urging them to bring legislation to the floor of the House to defund the Affordable Care Act, more commonly referred to as Obamacare. One Republican’s name is very noticeably absent from the list of those courageous enough to sign this letter. That name is Jo Ann Emerson. Ms. Emerson has been using her vote against Obamacare as the primary pillar in her campaign bid to win an unprecedented 9th term in office.

As stated in a previous article, Jo Ann Emerson will in no way lead the fight for a full repeal of Obamacare.  Click this link to see the previous article. To view the Letter written by the 127 members of the House to Speaker Boehner  and  Majority Leader Cantor, and see for yourselves who put their names on the line to actually fight this legislation, click here.

Daniel Horowitz did and excellent article on this very topic in Red State that you can read that corroborates the need to pressure the House Leadership to bring this measure to the floor. Horowitz’s article, also contains the Letter written, in full, as well as a link to download the names of those who signed the Letter to bring this legislation to the floor. Click here to view his the article in Red State.

Representative Jo Ann Emerson has proven herself to be the embodiment of a career politician and Washington insider. She sits on the House Appropriations Committee, referred to as the “College of Cardinals” and has refused to sign a simple pledge to fight the very legislation she is campaigning against back here in our district. You can see Ms. Emerson’s true feelings and her desire to implement some form of a National Healthcare System on the American people by watching her exchange with President Obama (recorded by CSPAN in 2009).  In the video, she expresses her desire for some form of National Healthcare legislation during her entire tenure of 13 years in office. Of course, Ms. Emerson has now been in office for 16 years. You can see Emerson’s exchange with President Obama for yourselves here.

You can see for yourself just how hypocritical Ms. Emerson is, when it comes to fighting Obamacare in her own campaign ad picked up by the Washington Post, by clicking here or you can view it on her own Youtube channel here. Her campaign ad claims Emerson to be your champion against Obamacare, yet she refuses to sign a simple pledge to bring legislation to the floor of the house to defund it. When it comes to actually fighting Obamacare, Ms. Emerson is business as usual, talking the talk back in our district, while doing the opposite back in Washington DC. She has consistently demonstrated through her own actions, or lack there of in this case, that she will not work for a total repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

The people of our district cannot trust Emerson to stand up against this legislation. She has proven that, time and again to be the case. There is a conservative choice this election for those in our district. You can view the stance of Ms. Emerson’s primary opponent, Bob Parker, by clicking here. Mr. Parker will stand and fight for a full repeal of this monstrosity that has been put on the backs of our tax payers, our children, and grandchildren. You must do your own research and vote your conscience in the Missouri Primary Election on August 7th 2012. The general election will be too late to change anything. To change the character and nature of Washington DC, we need to change who we send to Washington DC.

“Every election cycle, nearly every single Republican candidate is quick to promote cherished American values such as free enterprise and individual liberty while out on the campaign trail. However, once elected, a disheartening majority of these elected officials end up abandoning the very principles that got them elected. They talk the conservative talk at home and walk the statist walk in D.C. Worst of all, many of these members of the United States House of Representatives represent strong conservative states and districts. They’ve been able to hide their not-so-conservative performance, until now.”                     Statement from the Madison Project website.

As hard as it may be to believe, there are still some people in south central and south east Missouri that buy into the false notion that our representative, Jo Ann Emerson is a “conservative republican”. That is absolutely and unequivocally false to anyone who does even a cursory examination of Ms. Emerson’s record.  According to multiple respected Conservative Foundations that rate members of Congress on their voting records, Ms. Emerson consistently ranks well below the bottom percentile of House Republicans, even ranking lower than many democrats who are likewise rated.  The Heritage Foundation whose members include notable conservatives such as Sean Hannity and Cape Girardeau’s own, Rush Limbaugh, rate Ms. Emerson’s conservative performance at 21 percent below the average of all the other House Republicans.  You can click this link to see Ms. Emerson’s Heritage Action Score CardThe Madison Project, quoted at the beginning of this article, is another well respected conservative foundation. They consider it their mission to, shed light on real Conservative perfomance. Recently, they added Ms. Emerson to their Wall of Shame after scrutinizing her non-Conservative and barely republican record. Click the following link to see Ms. Emerson’s Madison Project’s Wall of Shame evaluation. I wish it could be said that Ms. Emerson’s affronts and assaults to true conservative values are minor but the fact is they are egregious and perpetual.

True Christian conservative republicans would not vote against the rights of the unborn ever, as Ms. Emerson has done twice, with her votes to fund, with our tax dollars, embryonic stem cell research. To Christian conservatives there is no room for compromise when it comes to the sanctity of the God given rights of the unborn. It is a matter of principle. Ms. Emerson proudly displays her endorsement by Missouri Right to Life on her campaign paraphernalia and while stumping around our district yet is a proven flip flopper when it comes down to standing up for the rights of the unborn. You can watch the video below to see how it is Ms. Emerson is able to receive their endorsement despite her past mixed ratings by Missouri Right to Life.

If compromising on the Rights of the unborn weren’t enough, Ms. Emerson shows there is absolutely no shame or end to her liberalism with her donation to reelect one of her best friends in the House of Representatives, Democratic National Chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz of Florida. Ms. Emerson has attempted to spin this donation as a contribution to cancer research. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never heard of anyone donating to cancer research by making a recorded donation to someone’s political campaign. Why wouldn’t you just donate to the charity directly, which anyone can do, in the name of someone else, as a gift on their behalf. Click this link to see the Federal Election Commissions recorded donation from Jo Ann Emerson to the reelection campaign of Democrat, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. You can watch the following video to see Emerson campaign spokesman, Darren Lingle’s ridiculous attempt to dismiss this Federal Election Commission confirmed donation.

I think it’s fair to say, that anyone who may consider themselves to be a conservative and or a republican would be hard pressed to accept any member of the House supporting the reelection campaign of the chair of the Democratic National Committee, as a conservative. Likewise, Ms. Emerson further betrays the values and beliefs of the conservatives in our district by her cosponsorship of a bill in the House that seeks a taxpayer funded Bailout of Union pension funds. She is only one of nine republicans in the House that supports this legislation. It has escaped the attention of many in our district, that Ms. Emerson’s husband, Ron Gladney is a former Union Lobbyist and is currently a major power-broker attorney that represents some of the largest Unions in our country and our State. Click here to see the Unions that Mr. Gladney, Emerson’s husband of 12 years, lobbied for in the past and now represents.  In 2008, it is also worth noting that Mr. Gladney donated the maximum allowable by law, personally, to the election campaign of Barrack Obama.

It is estimated that this taxpayer funded Bailout of defunct or soon to be defunct, Union pensions will cost we the taxpayer no less that 165 Billion dollars. You can see the Fox News coverage coupled with the Emerson campaign’s attempt to explain her support of this pending Liberal legislation in the video below.

It’s no big secret to anyone who want’s to check that Jo Ann Emerson’s campaign is funded by Unions, like the ones her husband represents; lobbyists for corporations like the one’s her daughters work for (General Motors and Monsanto); and special interests. You can click this link to see Jo Ann Emerson’s close and suspect ties to Unions and lobbyists. The Madison Project sums up Ms. Emerson’s Conservative performance the best by stating,

“Emerson has been in Congress since 1996. [16 years] Even though she represents southern Missouri, the most conservative district in Missouri, Emerson has the most liberal voting record in her state’s GOP delegation and has one of the most liberal records in the entire conference. She is a member of the RINO Republican Main Street Partnership, a co-founder of the Center Aisle Caucus, and the Chair of the Tuesday Group, a meeting of House liberal Republicans. Not only has Emerson voted against every major conservative spending cut proposal, she uses her perch as one of the 12 appropriations subcommittee chairmen, “college of cardinals,” to continue to fund massive government programs. Emerson had a long history of liberalism long before this legislative session. She supports price and wage controls and every form of subsidy and bailout under the sun. She voted for No Child Left Behind, Medicare Part D, Sarbanes-Oxley, SCHIP, and TARP. She is a big-supporter of government-run healthcare, and even flirted with the idea of supporting Obamacare.”

The primary election is August 7th. Conservatives and Republicans do have a choice. Do your own research and vote your conscience at that time. We cannot afford another term with our resident RINO, Jo.

Many of the citizens of south east and south central Missouri, as well as the rest of the nation, were outraged by, and rightly so, the Bailout of Wall Street and the big banks when the housing bubble, intentionally created, burst in the fall of 2007. “Too big to fail” became the mantra for the mainstream media and our elected officials instead of self reliance and personal responsibility our nation was built upon. The Wall Street bailout that followed after the big banks and private investment firms effectively destroyed our monetary system was directly responsible for the birth of both the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street movements.  It didn’t take long for the regular folks out there, regardless of their political or ideological leanings to realize that they were being financially led to the slaughterhouse.  Average citizens around the country were all left wondering how this was allowed to transpire? Who was responsible? And, how do we fix it?  Reasonable questions all, and questions the media and our elected officials have monumentally failed, to date, to provide adequate answers to the people.

The highly overlooked and main factor that contributed to the financial collapse was the repeal of a not too well known act that was put in place after the Great Depression. That act was the Banking Act passed by Congress and signed by then President, Franklin Roosevelt in 1933. The Banking Act was meant to provide solutions to what the expert panelists of the Pecora Commission determined to be the causes that led up to our Great Depression. It contained four provisions within its pages that are more commonly known as  the Glass-Steagall Act.

The Glass-Steagall Act was meant to, and did, act as a firewall between the well known dangers of allowing the aspects of investment banking (Wall-Street) to mix in any way with the necessary functioning of the commercial aspects of community banking, such as business payrolls, pension funds, mortgages, small business loans, etc. It was realized then, and has proven to be true today, that when investment banks are allowed to meddle with commercial banking interests there are only two results that inevitably occur. First, that the private interests allowed to engage in this behavior will make tremendous profits in the short term. Secondly, the economic bubble that is created will undoubtedly burst and devastate the economy at some predictable point. Both of which occurred in this case on a scale unimaginable in our nation’s past.

What does all this mean? Well, in 1999 legislation was put forward to remove the barrier that the Glass-Steagall Act provided between these two very distinct and for over half a century, separate, aspects of banking. That legislation was the  Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act 1999 passed by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton.  This legislation, as one can imagine, was highly contested in both houses of Congress and voted on in various versions at least three times, just barely passing in one round of the House to move forward to the Senate. After numerous revisions the final Act was passed by Congress, with bipartisan support of 90-8 in the Senate, and 362-57 in the House November 4th, 1999. Why is this important to south east and south central Missourians and how does this relate to Representative Jo Ann Emerson you may ask?

Ms. Emerson, at one point during the various stages of this Act that would repeal the Glass-Steagall Act, was a “swing” vote (as was every Representative) on whether this damaging legislation would pass the House. Had Ms. Emerson or any other Representative, done the right thing at that point and voted against this Act to repeal the provisions that had well protected our commercial banking system since 1933, the Wall Street jackals, insurance companies, and big banks would have been prevented from looting our economy. Like many of her colleagues in Congress, Ms. Emerson failed to heed the volumes of testimony from experts that warned of the effects of the repeal of this legislation. Representative John Dingell is even on the Congressional record stating at the time that should the repeal be passed into law,

the bill would result in banks becoming “too big to fail’ and this would necessarily result in a bailout by the Federal Government.

The claims by the corporate owned media and our elected officials that “no one could have predicted this [complete economic collapse] or could have seen it coming” are patently false. Many did in fact predict this fiasco and saw it coming and managed to put it into the Congressional record as representative Dingell and others.  To put this in proper perspective, the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, which Ms. Emerson voted in favor of, allowed for the largest theft of real assets to occur in known human history.

Professor William K. Black, currently teaches as an associate professor of economics and law at the University of Missouri-Kansas city. He is the author of The Best Way to Rob a Bank is to Own One and the former government regulator that was able to catch the savings and loan crisis in the 1980s before that scandal completely wrecked our economy.  Professor Black, in an interview with Bill Moyers provides the best summary explanation of how this crisis was knowingly engineered and allowed to occur with the complete cooperation of the CEOs of the large banking/insurance interests and those in government like representative Jo Ann Emerson. This interview was recorded in April of 2010 and since then the cooperation and cover-up of the largest scandal and fraud ever perpetrated on the American people continues.

As just witnessed in the interview above, this economic depression was the highly predictable and inevitable outcome of the repeal of the Glass-Steagall provisions. That repeal allowed for the creation of the new exotic financial instruments like the mortgaged backed securities, derivatives, and insurance instruments that still plague our recovery to this day and remain on our books. To add insult to injury after the investment banks and insurance companies, like AIG, were allowed to privatize trillions of dollars in record profits with the complete compliance and assistance of our elected officials once they had completely looted and destroyed our economy they sought and won a highly controversial bailout, as predicted, from our taxpayers. Ms. Emerson actually voted for the bailout twice after it initially failed in the House the first time. In essence for years profits were privatized and losses socialized. This could only happen when a sufficient number of leaders in areas of industry and government both have lost nearly all semblance of personal integrity.

Is it fair to say that Ms. Emerson is completely responsible for our economic collapse? That would be giving her way too much credit in my opinion. It is however fair to say that she and all the members of the House and Senate that knowingly voted for the repeal of Glass-Steagall collectively are responsible. Had any member of the House, during the second phase of revision had the integrity to vote against the adoption of the repeal it is likely the economic meltdown that occurred in the fall of 2007 never would have happened. It is evident that many members of Congress, like Ms. Emerson have completely lost touch with those whom they are supposed to represent and act in what they perceive to be their own best interest and clearly, not that of the People.

That said, what do we do now? To date, every action that has been taken by those entrusted to right our economic ship, have only produced the effect of prolonging our crisis. The Federal Reserve’s policies of negative and artificially low interest rates combined with our government’s solutions of throwing good money after bad via bailouts, stimulus, and the nationalizing of private corporations will not work. Inflating the money supply massively as Fed Chairman Benrnake is fond of with quantitative easing will not work in any form. It never has in human history and it surely won’t in this case. These policies only increase the severity and duration of the crisis and it gets worse every passing day.  There is only one correct solution to this problem, which will work. The Federal Reserve and our government consistently refuse to do what is right because to do so is equivalent of giving a child a dose of nasty medicine, but it’s the only way to cure our ills and eventually it must be done whether they or we like it or not.

That solution is to liquidate the bad debt. Congress attempted to sell the bailout to the American people by saying they would use the funds provided to do just that, IE buy up the bad debt. Once the bailout passed however, they did the complete opposite. They used our money to buy up the smaller competition of the big banks. Our money was in essence used to make the banks and investment firms that caused the problem stronger and more powerful. What is still being kept from the American people is that the debt outstanding in the derivative markets and that remains on our books can never and will never be paid. As nearly any business owner can tell you, when an asset ceases to have value, it becomes a liability. The toxic assets in the form of derivatives that we have listed on our books as assets are in the factor of quadrillions of dollars. We did not incur this debt, nor should the people be held responsible for it. It is fake debt accrued through private gambling losses. This is of course separate from our National Debt which is fast approaching 16 trillion dollars on its own.

When faced with a similar situation, but by no means as severe as our own, the country of Iceland did exactly what needed to be done. First, they fired every single elected official, arrested those directly involved,  and liquidated the bad debt the banks had amassed without their consent. The people of Iceland struggled for a couple of years and are now back on their feet economically. The story of Iceland is largely ignored by our media, government officials, and large corporations because they were successful. This whole crisis has been and remains to be purposefully engineered in an effort to stifle and subjugate the American people. Those responsible like our representative, Jo Ann Emerson need to be held accountable for their actions if we ever wish to return to any semblance of economic prosperity and stability. To keep the same bad actors in power, whether it is in the big banks, Wall Street firms, or the hallowed halls of Congress, will only serve to perpetuate the crisis they initially engineered and will produce the same results.

With the festivities and parades celebrating the birth of our great nation fast approaching, it should be pointed out how some of our elected officials have worked diligently to destroy from within those rights and values we hold so dear. Countless millions have sacrificed, fought, and sadly, perished to preserve and protect our way of life. But, alas, this is nothing new. Roman Senator, Marcus Tullius Cicero warned us thousands of years ago.

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.

Southeast and south central Missouri representative, Jo Ann Emerson is the embodiment of Cicero’s observation on how great nations are brought to their knees. When Ms. Emerson isn’t voting in favor of any and all bailouts or job killing globalist trade deals that rear their ugly heads in the House of Representatives, she’s actively working towards undermining and circumventing our Constitution and Bill of Rights, which she swore, a now seemingly hollow, oath to protect and defend. A prime example of this can be seen in her exchange with House member, Democrat Mike Ross of Arkansas discussing our recent military involvement in the NATO led assault on Libya and the execution of Moammar Gadhafi.

The precedent has now been set for the adoption of the doctrine of  “preemptive warfare”  under the authority of NATO and the United Nations. This happened with barely a whimper of contention from our Congress and in fact with some members in complete acquiescence, like that of Representative Jo Ann Emerson. Ms. Emerson’s statements that   I am proud of the work that we did in Libya” … and that our role in that action … “is probably a good model for some of our future endeavors“  would have had our Founding Fathers sprinting to grab their muskets from above the fireplace and marching undeterred to Washington DC.

Now, apparently, the President no longer needs any approval from our Congress to conduct wars of aggression. Even against countries that pose no significant threat to our nation or our interests. What, may I ask, now separates us from any totalitarian or fascist state, past or present, other than the illusion of freedom? We fought against such actions and ideologies in World War II didn’t we? Members of Congress have no right to cede their authority to any other branch of government or to any international organization, for that matter. This is exactly the behavior that the framers meant to prevent with the  checks and balances  that they built specifically into our Constitution.

As a combat veteran who served two tours in the sands of northern Iraq, I take special exception to Ms. Emerson’s vote in favor of the  National Defense Authorization Act  or the NDAA. The NDAA is the mechanism used by Congress to fund our troops. It has been reauthorized every year since the beginning of the war on terror. Last year a new provision was added to the NDAA. That provision declares the whole world, to including the United States, a battlefield and as such, anyone deemed a  “belligerent”  may be held indefinitely until the end of hostilities without due process under the law. This does include American citizens despite Ms. Emerson’s claims to the contrary. This is a complete and total violation of due process and a subversion of the rule of law. It’s worth noting that everything the Nazis did was legal under German law. President Obama, himself, admits in his signing statement to the NDAA that he does in fact have this power, but his administration will not authorize it. We all know we can trust Obama and the Presidents that will follow him, right?

I want to clarify that my Administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens. Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a Nation. My Administration will interpret section 1021 in a manner that ensures that any detention it authorizes complies with the Constitution, the laws of war, and all other applicable law.   Barrack Obama

Obama appointee, Judge Forrest, ruled in favor of a group of journalists and activists who filed a suit challenging the constitutionality of provision 1021 of the NDAA. Specifically, Judge Forrest said in her injunction that the legislation contained elements that had a  “chilling impact on First Amendment rights”  and ruled that the government cannot imprison Americans over suspected ties with terrorists. Numerous State legislatures around the country have enacted or have pending legislation that will bar any State officials from cooperating with the federal government regarding any attempted NDAA enforcement used against their citizens.

Ms. Emerson not only failed to recognize her obvious mistake in voting for this treasonous act, but when given the opportunity to correct that mistake by supporting the  Smith-Amash Amendment  that would have repealed the indefinite detention provisions she knowingly voted against it and her campaign spokesman and staffer, Darren Lingle, extolled just how     “proud” she is of her vote. See the accompanying video.

Using the very mechanism that funds our troops to destroy the innate freedoms they are fighting to preserve and protect is the ultimate measure of hypocrisy. Support in Congress for the  National Defense Authorization Act , as it currently stands, needs to be called out for what it is: Treason. While celebrating the 236th anniversary of our Independence with
family and loved ones this week, I hope people take the time to consider our  Declaration of Independence  and the list of grievances it contained. Those justifications listed by Jefferson, Franklin, and Adams that lit the  brush fires in the minds of men  and sparked our quest for independence from a tyrant are as applicable to our situation today as they were when they were written 236 years ago. The difference is, today we call the tyrants Representative, Senator, and Mr. President. Conservative talk radio host  Mike Manchin  from 107.1  The Point  had the best commentary to date about the NDAA and Ms. Emerson’s treasonous vote.

Ms. Emerson and her ilk in Congress have incrementally, decisively, and continuously betrayed our nation, it’s people, and their oaths of office. These are but two examples. There are many more. As Cicero pointed out, our traitors from within need to be removed from office before the pillars of our city are completely undermined and the soul of our nation is left to rot. Those who fought to preserve what we have built here in this country, both past and present, would expect no less of us.

“Republican” House member Jo Ann Emerson, representing south east and south central Missouri is the worst possible choice for conservatives or republican voters to send back to Washington DC this November. If the people want a leader that will take on the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as “Obamacare”, Ms. Emerson is not that person. Although she finally cast her vote against this legislation, she took longer than most House Republicans in condemning it. Her protracted delay left her conservative constituents wondering what her stance was going to be on this issue.

Ms Emerson further worried her constituents who viewed her banter with President Obama during the White House Health Care Forum in March of 2009.

In Ms Emerson’s own words, as seen in this CSPAN excerpt, she thanks the President for his passion on this issue and admits that for her, “This [comprehensive healthcare reform] has been a passion of mine for the whole 13 years (now 16) that I’ve been in the Congress.”

She also cautioned her colleagues at the forum that it’s time “to take a fresh look”  at reform and further encouraged them to compromise on this important issue, saying, “All of us need to be willing to give a little” to enact the monumental and highly controversial legislation that the Affordable Care Act has now become.

Sentiments like those that Ms Emerson exchanged with the Obama in March of 2009 are hardly indicative of a Representative that can be trusted to lead the charge to fully repeal this legislation. Last Thursday’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, has apparently rewritten the legislation in order to uphold it, now as a Tax. It is now more important than ever to get true conservative fighters elected to both our Houses in Washington DC, as well as in our State Legislatures.

In the sixteen years that Ms Emerson has been a Congresswoman, taking over for her late husband Bill Emerson who likewise served for sixteen years, she has written and passed less then half a dozen bills through Congress. She is the epitome of a career politician who goes with the flow in the Halls of Congress mainly choosing the path of least resistance.  Conservatives in the 8th district are still reeling from all the Bailout votes Ms Emerson has cast and if they trust her to deal with the monstrosity of this legislation they will be wringing their hands and pulling their hair yet again.

Ms Emerson is currently in a highly contested primary election race for the Republican nomination. She is running against a tea party conservative Bob Parker. Bob Parker is a farmer / rancher / business owner that has lived, worked, and raised a family in Texas County for over 30 years.  Mr. Parker took on the three decades of the “Emerson machine” in 2010 and garnered 35 percent of the vote at that time. The most any challenger has ever received against Ms Emerson. That was an amazing feat despite being largely unknown to the citizens of the district and relatively new to politics at that time.

Since 2010 Bob Parker has amassed a tremendous amount of real grassroots support while Ms Emerson’s approval ratings have continued to plummet. If the recent primary defeats of entrenched established incumbents like that of Senator Dick Lugar in Indiana, Rep. John Sullivan of Oklahoma, and the failed attempt to remove the conservative Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker are any indication Ms Emerson’s days may be numbered. The primary election and the fate of Missouri’s 8th Congressional district will be decided on August 7th.
